That’s how I described our media today. I actually think I was being kind.
3 “newspapers” ran the same front page story this morning, frothing that Nicola Sturgeon was hauling down the union flag and that the LGBT flag would be displayed more often.
So what’s this rotting cat actually hiding? What could this respected media be covering?
Well the Independent is talking about how Hunt has confirmed that Brexit could disrupt the supply of cancer drugs to the UK
Or then there’s the Times saying HMRC is under pressure to give US companies favourable tax breaks and reporting what appears to be the annual sexual harassment at a Dorchester charity dinner
The Guardian reporting that the majority of children in poorer areas are now in poverty
Noooo, a flag is more important to “our” journalists in Scotland.
Yes I know I’m writing about people talking about flags, but these are the arseholes that define the debate in this country. This has run UK wide now. I despair.
It doesn’t matter that the “story” was quickly called out by Nicola, more than once as the pearl clutching spread.
In the end she put out a series of tweets:
There are two essential elements to the story. One, that
@scotgov has recently changed its practice on what flags to fly from government buildings on Royal occasions; and two, that I ordered such a change. Both are wrong.
Since 2010, the Lion Rampant has been flown on Royal occasions – entirely appropriately. Since the Lion Rampant is the Royal Banner, it is not clear to me why anyone would object to that. However, the key point is that there has been no change to this since 2010.
As for the claim that I ordered a change, I have issued no instructions, orders, authorisations – or even expressed an opinion – about changing flag policy. The update of the guidance was an administrative step – albeit a sensible one – and not done at my request
Sadly, the truth will not matter to some in today’s media – and that’s part of a much bigger problem, I’m afraid. But I still believe (hope) it matters to most in the media – and certainly to the public.
This was backed up by Alec Salmond, who put out his own statement which included:
I changed the policy on flag flying back in 2010 after an audience with Her Majesty the Queen at Balmoral the previous year.
It seemed obvious to me that the appropriate flag to be flown on the occasion of royal birthdays is the Royal Standard or The Lion Rampant. The only people who can order that to be done are the Queen herself and the First Minister as her representative.
How is this news? It’s 8 years old! I think that classes it as olds.
Of course this has brought out the frothiest of responses
I have a new hashtag for him #Twat.
So much for a union of equals? What was it May said at her faux Burns Night, it is “an enduring union” but maybe not in the way she means.
This imperialism is getting worse. And yet despite the falsehoods what does the estemed Farquharson say?
Nooooo, it can’t possibly be the fault of the people who write it. Poor lambs.
Thank god for people like Mandy Rhodes, a small island of sanity surrounded by a sea of middle-aged, middle class mono-thinking hacks.
Just fuck off.
You cannot defend stuff like this and then get huffy when people take the piss out of your “profession” and colleagues.
Of course others also had to stick their tuppence in. They awoke Ruth Davidson from her safe room to let her know there was a dead cat she can tweet about.
And then Kezia Dugdale – she who left Holyrood for how many weeks to play in the jungle? Let me get that Brasso out for you, you’re losing some of your shine.
That’s right, Nicola is superwoman, she’s either going to drain all the water from Kirkintilloch or personally carry the trains through the floodwater.
Oh, and for those’s saying she should join the SNP. Yeah right, she’s been hanging out with Foulkes far too long. She’ll not leave, her seat at Holyrood is dependent on her being a Labour MSP. She’s list. She moves, she’s out of a job.
